Urban Decay Visit & Build Your Own Palette System

By  |  38 Comments

Back in January, I got to take a trip to Newport Beach, CA to go to Urban Decay Headquarters for a super-secret-ultra-exclusive reason (seriously. I had no idea why I was going until I walked into their HQ, but it was Urban Decay, how could it be bad?) Upon arriving, I found out who else was invited- Temptalia, FrmHeadtoToe, Kandee Johnson, and  Refinery29. I also found out the reason for our visit- to get a sneak peek of Urban Decay’s new eyeshadow revamp, along with being able to create our own palette with the new colors, and showcase it on UD’s website!

From the UD website.. neat!

The Urban Decay HQ is really really neat, and not at all what you would picture for a “corporate headquarters”! It personifies the UD brand really well!

The wall you are greeted with when you walk in. LOVE this collage!

The Alice in Wonderland themed bathroom

From the men’s bathroom.. they made sure we saw the undies hanging from the antlers, lol!

I want this chair!

After the tour, we sat down and got to talk with Wende Zomnir, UD’s Executive Creative Director. She explained the new eyeshadow formula, packaging, and the new palettes to us. It was really neat to hear about the brand from one of the co-creators, and hearing stories about how different shades were made, and how they got their names. I’m a huge behind-the-scenes fan as far as movies go, and it’s no different for eyeshadow brands!

Overall, there are 68 shades in the new eyeshadow selection. Some are new, some are old faves, and some were exclusively found in previous palettes. The eyeshadows all have a new formula, which is smoother, and packs more pigmentation than ever before. The packaging also got an upgrade, its much sleeker, and has a nifty pop-out feature for those of you that prefer your palettes in a palette!

This brings me to another feature they added, the palette. Because the eyeshadows have a pop-out option, you can put up to six into these new palettes.

The palette come with a brush and a new eyeshadow, Walk of Shame, which is a pinkish-peach matte. It also has a full sized mirror on the lid.

Each of us got to choose 6 shadows to add to our custom palette that we got to show on the website. Here are the colors I chose..

Brights, brights, and more brights! Shocking, right? :)

(Sorry these photos aren’t the best lighting quality.. had to work with what I had at UD HQ!)UDshadowrevamp

Zephyr- shimmery pearl

X- The most amazing peachy-melon eyeshadow. If you have blue eyes, buy this right now

Woodstock: Do I even need to explain why this one was chosen?

Kush: This is MUCH MUCH more grassy green than the photo. It looks olive here, it’s not!

Peace: Another shadow I don’t think I need to explain. Much more electric blue in person. amaaaazingUDshadowrevamp

Psychedelic Sister: deep purple to round things out.

That photo was taken with Temptalias 10 pound RIDICULOUS DSLR. can you tell? it looks amazing even with the crap lighting, lol

A beautiful “I-didn’t-know-you-were-taking-a-picture” picture of me, curtesy of Christine

The next day, we each made a video to talk about how we felt about the new shadow system. Here’s mine!

Wow, thats a hot thumbnail face, Leesha! -__- haha

Now that the eyeshadows have been released, I found out that these are a LOT more expensive than I would have originally guessed- Each eyeshadow is $18, and the palette is $18, so if you were to fill the palette with just 5 shadows (and get the complimentary Walk of Shame shade) it would cost over $100. That’s a lot for 6 colors!  While I really do like the new shades that I picked out (I can’t speak for any other shades or formulas) that is a steep price to pay, considering brands like Inglot have 10 palettes for $40, and at MAC you can get a 15 palette, over double the shadows, for just over $15-$25 more.

Overall: Love the new formula, wish there was a discount for buying a full palette.
What you need: if you love brights, Woodstock and Peace.

Available for $18 per eyeshadow and $18 per palette from Urban Decay.

It’s nice that they have a customisable palette now, but for that price? Just, wow. :( I would rather go to Inglot and pick up the Freedom palettes and fill those in.

That said, I suppose it’s a new concept for them, so it might take a while before they can lower down costs?

X looks a lot like Lancome’s Kitten Heel, I wonder how similar the two are, and how similar X is to Mac’s Melon Pigment, and Antique Pink. Those are some of my favourite colours right now, and make a very pretty, easy, look for university every day.

I have ‘X’ in pigment form and I love the peachy pink duochrome awesomeness!  I’ve been wondering when Urban Decay would introduce customizable palettes, but it’s too bad their so expensive.  I already love the eyeshadow formula and I hope it’s still to my liking after the reformulation.  Do you know if this means that palettes like Naked2 that are manufactured later will have the new formulation?

Oh man! UD had me hooked right up to the price! Yikes! Really nice colors none the less. I think I will hold off though and pick up some more Inglot the next time I am in Vegas.

LOVE ♥ your honest review.  Considering that in the Naked palettes their eye shadows average just over $4 per shadow…. this seems a tad steep.  Thanks for having the blogger balls to spell it out :)  I do like the concept though.

I think the price point is going to be a big road block for people and these palettes. Like the first comment says, the naked palette has the same size shadows for and average of $4, I can’t even imagine paying full price for these shadows on top of the palette. I don’t buy their individuals shadows unless their on sale normally anyway, so knowing that there’s no discount for the palette means I won’t be doing it any time soon either.

I have Woodstock and Psycadelic Sister and I love them!!! I am also a bit bothered by the price of the palette. Grrr hopefully they go down in price. Hopefully the discontinued / old formulas will go on sale (hey I can dream!)

On another note, how awesome that you got to do this!! I saw the video posted on UD’s website and was so excited to see you!! rock on!

I’m so mad that these area so expensive! My fiance would kill me for spending $18 on one eyeshadow. But since you got me addicted to Hautelook, hopefully they’ll do some sort of special on there to kick off the new formula. A girl can dream right?? lol

I loved these til I saw the price, sorry UD but I’m not spending that much when I can get gorgeous Inglot colours so much cheaper, it’s just not worth it.

the headquarters look pretty awesome though! i wouldn't mind working there. ;]

This is ridiculously expensive! And every palette comes with that same shadow in it? That’s what annoys people about the pre-made palettes and they’re doing it in the custom ones?

  16. Sarah

    March 28, 2012 at 9:03 am

Massively loyal to UD, but that is ridiculous. I’d totally be willing to pay that for the palett, but each eyeshadow 18 bucks? Way too steep for my pocketbook! Also, that chair! LOVE it!

Oooh amazing! Although I have to say about the price… $18 is like £11 which is less than what they are here in UK!  They’re £13 which is nearer £21! No doubt we’ll get it bumped up at our end too anyway… :/

    • Jennifer Smith

      March 28, 2012 at 2:45 pm

Ha!  I thought the same thing, our UK prices are ridiculous >.<

I would definitely buy this palette you chose. Not only because you designed it [hello fave blogger! <3] but I love those colours too! It always surprises me when I have the same taste as a guru!

FYI – love the shirt in the video!!

I was so excited and went and place your and Kandee’s palettes on my cart and then WHAM! I saw the price…yeah, not gonna happen. Sorry UD, that is insane price to pay when you get so much more colors in other palettes for less money.

I would be muuuuch more excited if they did something like what other companies do where you pay a certain amount to build a palette on the site and order that, rather than what UD wants people to do.  If I could just build a palette of the colors I use for everyday plus a couple of fun ones, all for, like, $30 or $40 (the Naked palette costs that much, for goodness’ sake), I would be on that so fast.

I want this chair too! I ues MAC’s Tweet Me almost everyday but UD’s X is the most perfect dupe for that one. You don’t need blue eyes to rock that one. It’s amassing on almost all skin tones as well but plays a little differently.

Haha, looks like you guys had so much fun :D I was so excited when I heard of this, then I saw the price… Are you kidding me?
I love UD, don’t get me wrong, but even compared to their palettes this is a stupid price. I’d be happy to pay half the price for half the product, but even then it’s pushing it. I can’t wait to try the new formulas, but it won’t be at this cost.

I REALLY with UD would start making palettes with just the pans like MAC and Makeup Forever and Coastal Scents. I think with their packaging they would sell really well. Especially if they dropped the price and sold the eyeshadows in pan form. The new packaing for the eyeshadows looks cool, but for people who are going to take it apart and put it in palettes it’s kind of useless.

I have to admitt I am willing to pay $18 for an eyeshadow. It’s the same price I paid for the old ones, maybe a $1 less I don’t remember and I REALLY like their formulas. I know you can get a lot of the new colors in a lot of the old UD palettes, but I would rather pay $18 for one eyeshadow then get a bunch of eyeshadows I don’t like just to get that one or two in the palette I do.

I’m another “Wish UD would offer discounts for the palettes/sell the inserts for less” person. I’m a total UD fan, and have more of their stuff than I feel like listing, but sometimes I still feel they’re a little too money-hungry. I know it costs a lot more to make a quality shadow than a cheap one, but still…

Thanks for showing us your trip to the HQ! I’d love to go sometime. I don’t if I’d be able to keep myself from trying to run out of the building with a backpack full of display products though, lol.

PS you look great in the “What? Oh, you’re taking a picture of me.” photo. Your surprised look is much more photogenic than a lot of people’s.
