Urban Decay Matte Shadow Swatches

By  |  37 Comments

I’m pretty sure I grabbed a few of these from Hautelook when they were on sale awhile ago. LOVE when Urban Decay goes on Hatuelook (actually I love when any brand does) Sale prices are awesomeee :)

These are all super velvety to the touch, they remind me a bit of the matte squared colors from MAC.

Shades

Shades
ABC Gum: The name on this reminds me so much of elementary school, I love it. Its a matte light peach. A little too dark for me to use as a highlight, but would work well as one for anyone with a warmer dark skintone. This also is a great transitioning color; I would use this around the edge of a dark crease color to help blend it out easier.

Shades
Illegal: This photographs way more brown than it is, it has more of a muted purple to it than shows. It’s a unique color, I’m not sure if I’ve seen another matte like this.

Shades
Purple Haze: Matte warm purple. This one swatched kinda chalky, but I think it just needs a good base (swatches were done with no base!)

Shades
Chronic: This one confused me. I double checked- it says it’s a matte, but when I got to this photo I noticed all the sparkles. I checked the shadow just now, LOADS of green sparkle! Weirdly enough it doesn’t even show up on my swatches much, but I don’t know why there is sparkle if it’s a matte.

Shades
Narcotic: Matte aqua blue. I love this one, I’m such a sucker for this type of blue! super pretty and creamy.

Shades
Electric: This is similar, but lighter, than MAC Electric Eel.  It’s also a bit greener, I think! Very pretty :)

Shades

These were swatched in order of above pictures, with no base.

Generally I think a sticky base would work best for these, as mattes have a tendency to not want to stay in place or be a bit chalky. Something like MAC Cream color base, or even an eyeliner smudged across the lid would work really well!

Jealous, I totally wanted to pick a couple of those up but am always lacking money when the best things go up on Hautelook. I did score some Ouidad conditioner for a sweet deal, though, so at least I’ll be stocked up on that for a while.

I got the green one on Hautelook the other week. When I opened it I just stared at it and went “Ummm…. why are you sparkly?” Oh well, it’s still pretty.

I love these. I was planning on going to get new eye shadows and stuff as soon as I get some extra cash. I think I shy away from eye make up because I wear glasses. But I’m going to experiment with some new looks soon. Thanks for the post

I got the Narcotic & Chronic set from Hautelook, I was SO excited. But the colors are so horrible… they hardly apply let alone stay on or last. I tried UDPP and paint pots and UD 24/7 eyeliners, but the eyeshadow would just wipe (basically fall) right off. And if you attempt blending it disappears.
Uhh… am I doing something wrong? Do you really like these?

I got those ones too, and had similar problems. I started using SUPER sticky bases (ones I’d normally never use because they crease from being so sticky), and they work fine then. I also found you REALLY have to pack them on. Narcotic is a little better than Chronic overall from what I’ve tried. Hope that helps!

I agree about matte shadows needing a creamy base. Art Deco eyeshadow base from home shopping network is what I use with matte colors, or loose powder eyeshadows that tend to poof everywhere

UGH WANT! I signed up for Hautelook after your loose UD swatches, and then was promptly disappointed that they don’t ship to Australia D: Makeup is SO expensive here :(

::sigh:: you almost made me cry at the mention of MAC [squared]… it’s a shame they don’t have more in that formula because the texture is amazing! these colors are pretty but i also agree there shouldn’t be any sparkle in a “matte” finish.

I have the purple haze colour and it’s great. I also really like this metallic brown one y Urban Decay it’s my most favourite colour ever. It’s called toasted. The green looks really pretty too! I like the blues but I am not such a big fan of wearing such bright colours like the blue.

I bought Chronic from the same Hautelook sale. I got some other things, too. Sadly, I was too low getting to the site, so I missed some of the other shadows and “good” stuff.
    Great swatches!

Sad that I bought mine for full price almost two years ago, but I didn’t even know about Hautelook then.
I have Revolver (grey), Narcotic and Chronic, and I like all of them. I like to use them to blend out the edges of a smoky eye to give it a glowing effect. I used Revolver once as a cheek contour when I was doing a dead doll look, and it was pretty cool.

I just love makeup blogs, they are seriously so helpful. Hautelook is having another urban decay sale & I’m lucky enough to have some extra cash in the bank account this time (never happens) Ordered, Purple Haze, Electric & Jones matte eyeshadows. Loved the swatches for Purple haze, & Electric on your post! Also ordered their tinted moisturizer since it’s only $10 today, & Temptalia had a blog post about it as well. So awesome you ladies are so helpful! I also picked up their cream shadow in Whipped. Couldn’t find a blog post on it, but I could’ve sworn I saw a twitter post or something where you sided on the UD cream shadow rather than another product.

Anyways I’m pretty pumped this morning, & happy with my online makeup community!
