Urban Decay Loose Shadow Swatches

A few weeks ago Hautelook had a sale with Urban Decay products that had all products shown available for $2 each! I decided to pick up a bunch of the UD Loose powders, because I always wanted to try them out but never wanted to shell out the high price tag ($20 each).

The main thing I don’t like with these is the packaging. I really don’t like the brush it comes with, it’s stiff and doesn’t allow much application wise; it actually almost seems to cause the pigment to bounce off the brush, so it is a little messy. I found when swatching these (which I did with the brush) that there was a ton of fallout, but I think that if you poured a little bit of pigment onto an artist plate or petri dish and used a different brush, they would be much less prone to fallout.

The colors themselves had great pigmentation, they were nice and opaque right off the bat. I especially like the darker colors, they have a really pretty glitter that is easy to see (lots of pigments tend to have glitter but it isn’t too noticeable). I think that these would be especially awesome if you applied them wet!

Eeehh… just from looking at these swatches I’m not very impressed. I mean the colors aren’t bad, but, there’s just so much better out there… however, if I could snag them up for $2 a piece also I probably would haha

    • Leesha

To be perfectly honest that’s the reason I grabbed them. The packaging isn’t the best choice in my opinion!

  • Ashley

I hate hate HATE the brush and packaging. I’m trying to find a good jar to put them in, ’cause I have Asphyxia, Goddess and Gunmetal. I haven’t even really been able to use them ’cause the only one I get any sort of product out of is the Goddess one ’cause it’s nice and dark. Even then it’s pretty sheer, unless I want to lose half the product.

Thanks for the swatches. Now I want Rockstar!

  • pandanie

hey could u put sum swatches wet?
im very curious too c what they would look like

  • nikki

i bought almost all of those myself, i like them, but haven’t really played with them yet. i agree i don’t like the brushes they are super messy.

  • Jessica

You take such gorgeous product and swatch pictures! I know that must be hard and I appreciate it <3 . I bought the $2 shadows at hautelook too. I feel the same way about the packaging, you lose so much product, I'd never pay $20 for them. I got yeyo, x, shag and smog. The pigmentation is very pretty and the texture almost looks wet when you apply it.

  • Emily

I bought a bunch of them on that sale too. Yay for awesome sales!

I love those colors. I recently bought some of the L.A. Colors loose shadows from Dollar Tree and noticed the same problems. I think I’ll probably pop the insert out of it and dump it into a container.

    • Sara

Yeah, the UD packaging looks really cheap/cheesy to me.
      I’m nooooot a fan.
I think I shall also just pop out the insert and pour them into a clear jar w/ a screw-on lid. :D

  • Rachael

I bought a few of these a few months back when they were 1st on Hautelook and I wasnt a fan b/c of the brush. But now that you have given me the idea of pouring some out and using another brush I might pull them out of the back of my drawer and try to use them again. Thanks!!!

    • Leesha

the brush is totally useless In my opinion, I might even put them in some clear jars all together :)

UD doesn’t have a great track record with packaging. I noticed that with their primer potion…the way the bottle is shaped-it wastes so much product! This looks equally as bad.

I am experimenting with loose shadows-had I known these were on hautelook, I may have snagged them simply for low price-wouldn’t feel badly about making mistakes/wasting product.
They are decent but not my first choice for a ‘great’ shadow.

  • Amber

You had the same idea I did! I bought some too when they were on sale :] 90% off, can’t beat that!

  • Danny

These remind me of a few of Hard Candy’s Powder Kegs. They’re pretty, but you loose a lot of product with their brush too. They don’t have the same colors either, but there are some similar ones in there. Hard Candy’s powder kegs are around $6.oo each, depending on which store you get them from, and what region you are in I’d say. That’s without tax though of course. I’d say they’re about the same quality if anyone would like to try one out. I’ve got Lock Down, which is a dark smokey green with turquoise and light green shimmer. I don’t use it that offen though.

  • Purplelicious

    Wow that is amazing

  • cheekyv9

Been kicking myself in the butt for not taking advantage of this deal! I hope they make another appearance with hautelook!

  • Heather

I bought picked these up off Hautelook as well, along with a matte blue and matte green shadow! My plans are to transfer them into clear plastic jars, if possible.

I saw these same pigments at Winners, for like four dollars each Canadian. There was a tester one so I opened it up and right away the packaging put me off: Not enough product for the MSRP, really bad hard brush and they were extremely messy. By the time I got the product out I didn’t care anymore what the colours were like and just left it! LOL!

  • Claudine

Wow, that is so funny because I bought the same ones on hautelook as well. Was so happy with the price. I also purchased a couple of mascaras in graffiti and flipside. I completely agree with you on the packaging and brushes. The pigmentation is amazing, but better applied with a different brush. Love the sparkles!!!! :)

  • Kiran

I bought one in the color sham

  • Heather

I got Gunmetal, Goddess, Rockstar, Graffiti, X, Shattered, and Smog with the Hautelook blowout. I love them, but definitely agree with the packaging problems. It’s hard to use straight from the bottle, but if you put it in a petri dish or something, it’s fine. The darker colors don’t have as much sparkle when you do that though. I don’t know why it doesn’t seem to transfer when you use a different brush, but it’s annoying. I’m wearing Rockstar right now, and it looks practically matte.
My favorite combination is Graffiti on my lid (over NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Horseradish, and Shattered in and above the crease. They really pop together.
Still haven’t tried them wet though.

  • Louise

even though the brush is reallllly bad the colours look sooooooooo pretty!!!!!!

  • Karlie

I agree about the packaging. I was so tempted to get some during the HauteLook sale, but I didn’t just for that reason. It’s pretty lame when someone won’t give $2 for your product because your packaging sucks so hardcore.

  • Diane

I got Asyphixia and Gunmetal from Hautelook (the rest were sold out by the time I got online), and a couple of the matte shadows as well.
I’m still waiting on my package, though. I think from everything I’ve heard though, I’m going to put this in sample jars instead. That brush even looks terrible in pictures.

  • macytron

I got rockstar on hautelook and while I really like the color, I totally agree about the packaging/brush. I thought I had gotten all the excess pigment off the brush and then when I went to apply it, the shadow fell all the way down my face. Thanks for the idea to put them in other jars – that will definitely help.

  • ghostie

I love Goddess, seems like a gorgeous color!

I do really like the colours, but I agree with you; the packaging seems poorly thought out. I wouldn’t have thought of having a brush included with the loose powder, it seems redundant since most people will likely use their own brushes instead.
2 dollars though? That, is epic!

I picked up Rockstar, Protest, Gunmetal, Asphyxia, Yeyo and Graffiti and love them. I was excited to get the colors I didn’t have in a pencil or palette for only $2. I agree the packaging and brush are not practical and I was considering pressing them, but they are so cute!
=( I don’t love Asphyxia which I purchased because in high school (almost 15 years ago arg) my best friend always wore it and Gash… and still does… It looks better on her =D I also picked up the glosses in O, Deep and Gash I love them and want more!

  • Melissa

i poured mine into a couple of small clear jars. i highly recommend doing this and it wasn’t hard at all because the product comes really, really easily.
also, using them wet = pure awesomeness. i have yeyo and it is AH-mazing when used wet!

  • Nora

omgg those dark colors are ahhhmaaaziingg!! especially Godess and Rockstar. I WANT :D

  • http://www.youtube.com/misslene miz karlene

    protest looks the most unique

  • samantha

Hahahha, I love how UD always has drug slang names for their products. Yeyo for the white is a slang term for Coke, and then they have Kush, which is in the third Book of Shadows if Im not mistaken.

  • Amy

i have the goddess pigment. its a little hard to work with. i love the color and pigmentation on it! i agree about the brush i normally use the brush to put the pigment on a pallet or small dish so i can use a makeup brush to apply it. but still having a small problem with using it but thats mostly my own inexperience i think

  • http://www.blog.mandyemais.com Mandy

Nice colors and nice price. What’s the product size? Pictures some times can fool us!

I also don’t like this type of make with brushes… there is, for sure,a ton of fallout.. I hate it!

  • Gina

I have Yeyo and Shattered, and they’re SO beautiful, but the packaging pisses me off! Urban Decay never fails to make an incredible product in the worst packaging. That aside, I think you should do a tutorial with them! Thanks for the swatches! X is such a pretty orange.

  • http://www.facebook.com/nj908 Christina

i saw that too on hautelook.com…i bought them as well, but when i noticed the sale i could only get 9 of the pigments, i hate the packaging as well, but the $2 price was def. worth it.

  • http://youtube.com/alliseexmakeup18 allisee

I bought two of these over the summer when UD had the five dollar sale. I got rockstar and graffiti… I HATE this packaging, and rockstar. I’m so glad I only paid five dollars haha I like graffiti other than the packaging, but I recently gave rockstar away, thank goodness :)

  • Gabe

Yeah I ordered some of these from that sale thanks to you posting I think it was on facebook! thx Leesha! yeah I agree they are great but the packaging sucks!

  • Krii

Hey leesha I actually was able to get in on that sale i thought it was too good to be true but i got me a couple i sent them to my mom in the states tho cuz they dont ship out here. So i havent got to try them out but thanxx for the swatches

  • http://saffihime.blogspot.com/ Saffi

Ive seen these down my local cheap shops and in the markets but since they were like £2 and the packaging felt so bad i thought they were fake so ive never bought them
    Thanks for the review :)

  • http://ttotah.mymarkstore.com Tiffany

I find this quite hilarious because these are the same EXACT 9 colors I purchased during this sale :)

  • http://www.blogspot.com/forthewren Rachel Marie

I saw those! D: But for some silly reason I didn’t pick any up. Now I’m so upset! My friend had said she heard that they weren’t that fantastic, but I think that with a different brush they’d be great! Maybe UD will do another sale sometime soon! D:

  • Nikki

It’s funny how on their website, they rave about the packaging.

“The spill-proof tube even includes a high-quality brush.” – Direeeect quote.

Yeah, that’s obviously bull. But anyway…I bought a few of these on a previous HauteLook sale, and when this one came around, I didn’t get the rest of the colors just because I hated the packaging. I also feel like their staying power is terrible.

I did buy two shadows and several lipglosses. Also got their glittery gel liner which is BEAUTIFUL but it’s practically completely solid so impossible to apply. In my opinion, a waste of two dollars no matter how beautiful, because if I can’t put it on, nobody gets to see it. Oh well. Maybe I’ll try microwaving it.

  • Abby

OMG I’ve wanted Asphyxia for like a year! So Pretty!
