Proactiv Refining Mask Review

You know those times when your skin just decides to rebel, from what seems like out of nowhere? That was me this past weekend. My skin has been really great the past few months; few breakouts and overall pretty clear and nice. This past weekend I was home for my mom’s 50th birthday party (which was a blast!) and since I was only home for a few days and was just going to my parents’ house, I didn’t want to pack much as far as skincare goes because I didn’t want to check a bag, and those quart-sized bags can only hold so much! (I’m waiting for a company to make a travel kit with tiny 1oz sized bottles. every company always sells the travel bottles as 3oz, its too big and takes up way too much room!)

Anyways, My skin was definitely not a fan of this idea. By Sunday I had at least 5 or 6 cystic blemishes, which are those annoying under-the-skin ones that hurt really bad and you just have to wait for them to decide to leave.

My flight landed at midnight last night, and right when I got home I washed my face and grabbed this stuff- the Proactiv Refining Mask. I dabbed it on all of the cystic bumps and left it on overnight, and my skin has already improved!

The Refining Mask has a good percentage of Sulfer in it, which is actually really helpful for cystic acne. The one problem I have with this is that it doesn’t ever fully dry (like a clay mask would), which is only really a tiny problem if you are planning to use it overnight like I do. A little also goes a long way, which is nice because it’s a 3.5oz tube at $28, so it will last quite a long time.

Have any of you used this, and what were your results? You can pick this product up by clicking here.

be careful with proactive; your skin gets addicted to it and when you stop using it your skin breaks out worse than ever before.

also, apparently they also use horse urine in their products! eww

I love this product I use it on zits. Works wonders :)

  3. Jenn says

I used to use proactive exclusively, but I found that I wasn’t as nearly faithful enough with it. When I missed even one day, I noticed. Also, unfortunately it’s very expensive for the same results I seem to get from Clean and Clear or Clarisol. Nothing seems to be perfect, still looking for the “magic” combination or line.

I have tried proactive and unfortunately if i stopped using it I would break out everywhere and it really dried out my skin :( I am now using Clarins skincare products and they are AWESOME!!! I probably havent had any breakouts for about a year!!!! I just love their gentle exfoliating scrub (orange) and their cotton sead cleansers. They are a little on the high end when it comes to price but a tube lasts forever and is worth it!!!

Proactiv made my skin so much worse back when I used to have acne. If you have sensitive skin, I wouldn’t recommend using this product. With trial and error, I finally learned that my sensitive skin does not respond well to benzoyl peroxide, however, salicylic acid works wonders for me. The face wash I finally found that has completely revamped my skin is less than a $10 product…and that is the Clean & Clear Oil Fream Cream Cleanser for sensitive skin. Absolutely love it! Also, spending this kind of money on skincare is ridiculous, in my opinion. Once I changed my diet and starting using the Clean & Clear, I have not had any breakouts (for about 6 months…even around my “hormonal time”) So before you go out and spend a ton of money on products like Proactiv, try changing your diet and find a good, affordable drugstore product that works for you.

My skin always FLIPS OUT on me when I dont use the Proactive for more than a day. My favorite is the Advanced Blemish Treatment though, because it is really small, and you can take your travel sized bottles and the Advanced Blemish Treatment, and still not take up so much room in your bag.

    1. Zeet1970 says

Yeah, proactiv very drying and irritating to the skin in my case too.  The mask seemed to work well enough though.

  7. Victoria says

Okay so the RM is amazing and I know for a fact that PROACTIV doesn’t use horse urine in any of their products I worked for proactiv for 5 years and I absolutley love it your skin doesn’t get addicted to proactiv your skin is constantly changing and if you don’t keep up your skin care regimen your skin will get bad! There is nothing in proactiv to make you addicted.

I hated Proactiv. It did nothing to improve my regular acne, and caused me to break out in cystic acne. Needless to say I stopped using it after a few weeks. Also, because of the peroxide, my towels ended up bleached. I’ve had better results which considerably cheaper products.

    1. Zeet1970 says

Dr. Hauschka worked best for me… but VERY expensive.  Accutane worked well while I was on it, but as soon as I got off, back came the acne.

  9. Rachel says

My mall has 2 Proactiv vending machines. Has anyone else ever seen these?

    1. Zeet1970 says

We have one in our local mall, but it’s not turned on and there aren’t any prices listed.  I just want the refining mask.  The rest of the kit didn’t do squat for my adult acne.

  10. Megan says

I use Proactiv exclusively and I LOVE it! I think it really depends on the type of acne you have, your skin, and how faithful you are to using the products. It keeps my skin clear even during that time of the month. Once in a long while, I will randomly break out but it is soon under control again. I like the Refining Mask, really drys up acne overnight. :)

  11. Natalie says

Since I have been using proactiv my skin has cleared up sooo much. I absolutely swear by their products now. The refining mask is my absolute favorite. I usually break out a little before my period and this works to make my bumps and spots and whatever disappear within a few days :]

  12. Jessica says

Meh, it didn’t help mine (or my brother’s) break outs. First week showed some improvement, but after that we might as well have used a bar of soap. Skin was dry, irritated and broken out. I expected much better for the price.

I’m on a freebie site and it tells me to “click on the refining mask” and enter my information and it will be shipped. However, I can’t find anything like that, so that’s why I’m writig it here. My address is:
11105 Martin Kemper County Road Collinsville, MS 39325.

I’ve experimented with dozens of different acne products – and the only ones that worked were the Citrus Clear Control Acne Kit. It’s cheaper than Pro-active and less harsh on the skin. The Citrus Clear Moisturizer can sometimes flake a little.

I would also recommend using Citrus Clear for at least two weeks in order to see results. I definitely noticed a difference if I forgot to use the cleanser before going to bed so make sure you use it twice a day!!

I also love that you only need a tiny bit of each product to cover your whole face!

Howdy just wanted to give you a quick heads up and let you know a few of the
images aren’t loading properly. I’m not sure why but I think its a linking issue.
I’ve tried it in two different browsers and both show the same results.
