Healthy Beauty- Shredding, Hot Pants & Cookie Dough Dip

By  |  19 Comments

This week, I finally got off my butt and started working out. I started doing Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred, which is a 20 minute workout, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s easy! It’s pretty challenging, especially if you are like me and haven’t really worked out in months, and whenever you do, it’s only cardio with no strength exercises, basically ever.

I was so proud of myself for actually sticking with this all week, and then yesterday I started having pain in my back. I kinda assumed it was from slouching or something, but today during the workout I actually had to stop because the pain got SO bad. I think the main problem was that I was using 5 pound weights, and they were just too heavy for the reps and for someone who never ever did strength exercises. I’m planning to go at it again tomorrow, but after I go to target and get some lighter weights!

Every time I work out, I have been wearing these Hot Pants I got in December by Zaggora. They were on Groupon for half off, so I thought why not :) I was a bit skeptical at first, but the website has 297483294 reviews that are almost all 5 star ratings, so I figured why not? They are basically compression shorts that help to combat cellulite and make you sweat more. I don’t really have problems in my butt and thighs, but it does cover the bottom half of the stomach which is where I gain weight more than anywhere, so it still is helpful. I can definitely tell a difference in how much I sweat when I wear these, and my skin feels really soft as well from them :)

On another note, I did film a vlog! Basically talking about everything I just mentioned here, but ah well :)

One more thing I wanted to share was this awesome blog I have been going to daily called Chocolate Covered Katie. If you are like me, being healthy is hard because you love sweets! This is a healthy dessert blog, and it seriously rocks. Her most popular post is her Cookie Dough Dip. I made it yesterday, and its really good! The weird part is the main ingredient is actually garbanzo beans.. so its technically a sweet hummus (that sounds way less appealing than cookie dough dip lol) I definitely recommend checking her blog out, it’s great :)

Okay, that’s all for this week’s healthy beauty.. for this next week I’m going to try to keep going with 30 day shred, even though I have to go out of town for 3 days, and then my mom is visiting right after.. gotta push through!! :)

I did 30 Day Shred when I was trying to lose the last 15lbs to reach my goal weight, and it certainly helped me reach it! 30 Day Shred in the morning and a 30 minute walk after dinner had me losing 2lbs a week. I also like Jillian’s Yoga Meltdown video.

It is so worth sticking to the 30 Day Shred, Leesha! It’s the best feeling when you realise you’re getting better at it and not completely dieing, haha. I seriously couldn’t get past the 2nd set of level 1 for a week, so unfit! Now I can do all 3 sets and be able to recover and get on with my day. :)
If you’re lazy like me replace a couch with your elliptical, I think doing 15 minutes a day on my bike really helped me get my stamina up to be able to survive Jillian. :P

Congrats the first steps are always the hardest. I’ve been working out 6 days a week now for almost a year it’s going good. Otherwise I follow a lot of tumblr health blogs and if your looking for more healthy recipes or trade offs undressedskeleton on tumblr is a great one and she’s a success story and then you always have pinterest just look for healthy food or healthy recipes and you get a ton of options.

BTW I started 2 years ago doing Jillian it’s a great workout but after 30 days the DVD gets old :/

I admire your strength, that 30 miniute shread sounds way to hard for me, im not an excersise girl. Me, ive been working on watching what I eat, doing yoga and bike riding. Bike riding when I lived in houston was not a challenge, here in austin its painful! So many hills its exausting. I certinaly feel better when I ride tho. I have to try that cookie dough dip as well, I am also a self confessed sweet adict.

OMG I started do the shred this week too! I’ve attempted to do it a few times already to get off my freshman fifteen (I’m a college sophomore), but I’ve never been too motivated. I’m making a lifestyle change though now instead of focusing on how my body looks, and I’ve never felt better! You go girl… sending good vibes your way!

I like the shred but I can never stick to it for the 30 days because I get bored. Have you tried the Nike Training Club app for iphone? It’s so good, has loads of workouts and I find it really challenging.

I saw that Target has 3 lb weights on sale this week. I think it was $8 for the pair. I’ll probably be picking those up along with the 15 lb ones.

As someone who has suffered on and off with back pain (I’m talking can’t work for a week because I literally can’t move because of the pain with out using muscle relaxers and strong narcotics), be careful with your back. With how you described your back pain, you should take a few days till the pain goes away to start exercising again, IMO. You could have just over done it and it’s your body’s way of telling you it needs a break. Or you could have really weak core muscles, like me, and you may want to work on those first before doing something more intense (and possibly too intense like the 30 day shred). Just be careful and determine whether it’s soreness from being out of shape vs soreness from over doing it. If it’s from over doing it, that pain could last a while. I’ve done this many times and it’s taken me 10 years and a good physical therapist to learn when to not over do it while exercising especially when I feel like I haven’t exercised thoroughly enough.

You can use water bottles or soup cans as weights until you’re strong enough for your 5lb weights.

The reason the shorts make your skin soft is because it’s doing the same thing that using paraffin does.

I would imagine that the shorts would chafe if they make you sweat a lot (if your underwear gets soaked like one of the reviewers said, it could rub and that really hurts). Do they keep you warmer than regular workout shorts/pants?

You’ve sparked my interested in the 30 day shred. It’s probably too intense for me right now, but I want to see if my library carries it.

My aunt and I just started the 30 day shred today. We are doing it together even though we live in two different states. Good luck with it she’s a tough one.

Have you checked out Jillian Michaels’ podcast? I think it’s great motivation and she always has helpful advice. If you’re into her philosophy and attitude it’s definitely worth a (free) download.

Thanks again for a great blog and a bit of inspiration! I’ll absolutely be making that cookie dough dip… mmm…

    Hey,
solid effort on the shedding well done ! :)

Making yourself sweat more however does not increase weight loss. The weight you lose through sweating is just “water weight” and can lead to dehydration faster. You pretty much put the weight back on/ lose any firmness when u re-hydrate. The best way to combat problem areas is to focus on toning those muscles to firm the area :).

I tried your smoothie recipe was delicious!!
