Urban Decay: NOT Selling in China, plus my new UD obsession!!

Over the past month, the huge new in the beauty community was Urban Decay deciding to sell products in China. This was a very big deal for a lot of people because UD is openly animal friendly, and the Chinese Government reserves the right to test cosmetics on animals before selling them.

Today, Urban Decay announced the decision to NOT sell products in China.  From their website:

After careful consideration of many issues, we have decided not to start selling Urban Decay products in China. While several factors were important in reaching this decision, ultimately we did not feel we could comply with current regulations in China and remain true to our core principles. We know there are many progressive consumers in China who would embrace an opportunity to purchase non-animal tested products – our hope remains that we have the chance to offer Urban Decay products to these consumers someday in the future.
Following our initial announcement, we realized that we needed to step back, carefully review our original plan, and talk to a number of individuals and organizations that were interested in our decision. We regret that we were unable to respond immediately to many of the questions we received, and appreciate the patience our customers have shown as we worked through this difficult issue.
Since our founding in 1996, we have been committed to ending animal testing in the cosmetics industry. As demonstrated by the renewed support we have received from organizations like PETA and the CCIC, this principle remains at our core. Urban Decay does not test its finished products on animals, nor do we allow others to test on our behalf, and we require our suppliers to certify that the raw materials used in the manufacture of our products are not tested on animals. Urban Decay is proud to be 100% cruelty-free.

What do you think? Happy they changed their mind?

Speaking of Urban Decay, I did want to gush just a little about their new foundation that will come out with their fall line. It’s called Naked Skin- and I’m OBSESSED. It’s extremely thin in texture (think of the liquidiest moisturizer you’ve ever used) and is incredibly lightweight, but gets REALLY nice coverage. Usually when I use traditional liquid foundation like this, I let it settle for a few minutes then feel like I need to set it with a powder. This, I never feel that way. After a minute, its completely sunk into the skin and dried, and feels like you are wearing NOTHING. The name of this foundation is incredibly accurate! In addition, this foundation is coming in 18 shades. EIGHTEEN. How often do you see a foundation that comes in THAT many shades?!?! So awesome.

I have also been applying it with their new brush, the Optical Blurring Brush. It’s denser than your average brush, and has a rounded top, so you get a nice, even application of product. These two products together are seriously a winning combo.

I will definitely be talking more about this product soon! This will be launched the last week of July. and FYI- My shade is 1.0, in case you were wondering :)

Do you think it’d work for people even fairer than you? I’m assuming 1.0 is the lightest, but maybe there’s a lighter one, you never know.

        • xsparkage

i am almost positive there is a 0.5, but it is for people with pink tones

          • Sam

Oh I forgot China has that policy that testing must be done on Animals. I totally forgot about that it’s been a while since I worked on the FDA stuff and cosmetics though. Good for them, but it wont hurt them too much usually if people in China want something they find a way to get it.

    • Girlfactory

Or they will make a knock off :D

  • Christenagilbert

Are you still using the airbrush system? I’ve been thinking about buying one! But I also saw a post on make up forevers mat velvet.

    • Ashlee

I bought a Dinair airbrush system because she raved about them and I LOVE it,I would get one!

  • Di

Could you show us the foundation? Maybe posting pictures of yourself with and without it, or maybe in a video? This got me really curious and I would love to see it!

  • Adelina

Excited for this to come out! My shade is 3.0 and I managed to get a sample at IMATS recently. The brush is gonna be my first UD brush purchase. Wee!! The bottle for the foundation is gorgeous. :)

I’m so excited to try this, but I have the hardest time finding shades that are light enough AND neutralize redness.

  • Cosmogal090

I’m excited to try this foundation.  I use the MF Matte Velvet+ right now and I kinda feel like it’s heavy, and the number system is so confusing I never feel like my shade is 100% accurate.

I like that you are in makeup because it means you can use the computer much better than me.

    sweeeeet!

Do you know how much it is?? Can’t wait to try it!

To be completely honest, I am disappointed in UD for walking back on their plan to expand into China.  It’s really another form of how we alienate foreign countries, especially ones that we do not always agree with.  This only harms Chinese consumers, who have no control over what their government does.  Seems like Americans are quick to forget that China is not a democracy.  I think this is a shame because American business expansion really does change the world.  Sometimes for worse, but sometimes for better.  Now this company will not be able to effectively promote cruelty-free messages in China. I’ll say something else that might be unpopular, too.  If I were a Chinese national I would be far more concerned with the government’s egregious treatment of its people than its treatment of animals.

    • Heather

While I see your point about the Chinese people feeling alienated, you must admit going into a country that reserves the right to test an established product goes 100% against their brand’s ethics and identity. IT would also be alienating it’s loyal customers who love urban decay for that reason, PETA would pull their bunny logo, and they would no longer be able to call their Marley approved products vegan. In essence, they would be just like any other company, they would be loosing a huge part of what makes them different.

Besides all of that, they received such flack from the customers currently bringing them money. So many people, myself included, refused to go back to UD because we saw the move as selling out and corporate greed.

I for one, am happy. There are so many companies moving into China that i do not feel the Chinese market is truly alienated by this move. I thin UD is saving itself from losing the customers it already has.

I understand your statement, but as a Chinese myself, I find this terribly offensive and has a strong underlying racist feel to it. for me, I won’t be buying anymore UD just b/c of this nasty statement. Also, it’s not just the Chinese govt. the FDA and Japan require that any new ingredients must be animal tested to ensure
safety for importing cosmetics. I am a stem cell researcher in the university that work with lab animals. my old mentor now works with the FDA. So don’t just single out China. And China is improving right in front of the public eyes. All of my family lives in Beijing, and you have no idea how much they’ve improved. For a country, its core values is so much different from the western world, you need to consider Chinese history and its culture.
Also, as part of any business deals, it is highly unlikely that this was the only reason that they pulled out of China.

        • Sea_Dub

Well when China’s values and UD’s match up, then they can do business. Just because a country has policies that can been seen as incongruent to your corporations mission statement doesn’t make them xenophobic.

Oh my gosh, I need this fondation !! ;) If the coverage is good then it would be perfect for me. Currently I use The Body Shop moisturizer fondation but the coverage is less. Sooooo… This product look perfect.

Got a sample of this at IMATS and I must say I am loving it as well! So lightweight and great coverage. My skin reacted well, no breakouts. I’m excited for this to launch, I will buy! I’m assuming the brush is around $24 like all their other brushes…

  • Jennifurr

This just came out in Ireland! It’s amazing and the brush is one of the best I’ve ever used. It’s great for other uses than just foundation. At my local counter I bought both products together and got two primers with it for free! I love my local counter!

  • electric_harlowwww

I just purchased the Naked Skin foundation and the optical blurring brush based on your recommendation. I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! I wanted to test it to see how long it would last,  I am a nurse and go through some crazy situations in my makeup (haha) well, I worked a 12 hour shift, with the air out, sweated like crazy, came home and checked my face, still looked good, washed my face, my entire face was on the wash cloth!! This is how I know this foundation is a keeper!! THANK YOU!!!

  • Erin

I love this foundation, I’m Irish so rather pale, and this is a mircale as it does my shade!!! (0.5) Bought it at Sephora, which I LOVE LOVE LOVE!! wish they would come to the UK!!!

  • Mim

I am really disappointed in this foundation- I have combination skin and this foundation just sits on top of it and does not melt in or settle. So if I gently touch my skin, when I pull my finger away the makeup has transferred to my hand, and my face is now uneven.
