There has been a lot of hype about what seems to be the latest trend in nail polish: polishes that create a shattered effect on the nails when applied over another color. OPI has one, and I know China Glaze is coming out with one soon!
The OPI Black Shatter polish came out with both the Katy Perry Collection, as well as with a Serena Williams polish. Today We’ll be talking about that one!

With Black Shatter on top. The style of the shatter will be completely different on each nail, but I have noticed that the thicker the coat of the Shatter polish, the bigger the shattered pieces will be. Notice my ring finger versus my pinkie, huge difference!
If you want the shatter to be really small, like on this pinkie, do a REALLY thin, see-through, splotchy coat of the Black Shatter. You’ll want to make it an even coat, but trust me, it’s going to break apart anyways, and that’s the easiest way to control the shatter piece size I’ve found.
Black Shatter kinda dries to a satin finish, so if you want it to have a high-gloss, vinyl looking finish, apply a top coat. (These photos were taken before top coat was applied.)
